The Black American Heritage Flag, designed by Melvin Charles and Gleason T. Jackson in 1967, features diagonal red and black stripes with a central gold wreath and blunted sword, symbolizing Black pride, the blood shed for freedom, intellect, peace, strength, and the rich cultural contributions of African Americans to history and future potential. It serves as a powerful emblem of Black identity, struggle, and achievement in the United States, distinct from the Pan-African flag (red, black, green).

Design Elements & Meanings:

    • Red Stripes:
Represent the blood shed by Black people for freedom, equality, justice, and dignity.

    • Black Stripe:
Signifies pride in Black pigmentation and identity.

    • Golden Wreath:
Made of fig leaves (an ancient African plant), it symbolizes peace, everlasting life, and prosperity.
    •  Blunted Sword:
A Moorish boarding sword, representing strength, authority, and the historical contributions of Black cultures in science, art, and mathematics.

History and Origin: Created in 1967 during the Civil Rights era, the designers aimed to provide a symbol for Black American history and contributions, with an original, historic raising at a city hall in the late 1960s.

Usage and Display: It is used to honor Black history and is frequently flown at homes, in parades, and during Black History Month celebrations.
